DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist.

By Akshay Bhansali (@akshaytv)

Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV Newsa star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex— was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

“He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!”

Although I am a well-rounded music enthusiast and lover of all genres, I’d be lying if I said dance music wasn’t my specialty. Dance music has been becoming more and more popular and relevant with each passing day. I am here to supply you with the latest and greatest hits from all genres in the world of EDM, from dubstep to house. I’ve compiled a short list of some of the hottest tracks in EDM out there right now. Whether you’re an avid dance music fan, or just beginning to get into it, you’ve come to the right place. Now, without further ado, here are my picks for the 5 hottest EDM songs of the moment. Familiarize yourself with these amazing songs.

1. Resurrection (Axwell’s Re-Cut Club Version) – Michael Calfan

In dance music circles, Axwell, aka: one third of super group Swedish House Mafia, is practically worshiped–and with good reason. His talent speaks for itself, and he has been cranking out hit after hit for years. Beatport, which is essentially the iTunes of EDM, ranks all the songs in its system by popularity in purchases, and much to no one’s surprise, Axwell’s remix of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” is number one on the charts right now. Definitely an anthem for the books.

Justice was (Not) served in “Audio, Video, Disco”

Justice Delivers a Bad Second Album

By ADABELLE U. EKECHUKWU, CRIMSON STAFF WRITER

Before 2007, French electronic music was dominated by Daft Punk. However, in 2007, the world was formally introduced to the French electronic duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay who, under the name Justice, released their debut studio album, “†.” With its unstoppable combination of funky house rhythms and syncopated electro sounds, the album received great critical acclaim. Now, four years later, Justice has released “Audio, Video, Disco,” an album that, in all senses of the word, is sophomoric. An experimental blend of French electro, ’70s arena rock, and Italo-disco, Justice has created a compilation of tracks that together lack cohesion and individually lack finesse—two elements that were integral to the phenomenal success of their first album. Clumsy and juvenile, “Audio, Video, Disco” does not fall short because of the duo’s attempt to try something different. It is, however, just this experimental, trial-and-error quality and overwhelming disjointedness that sadly make it clear that the French electronic genre has seen better days. Continue reading

Amon Tobin and his amazing lights show can top Deadmau5 or Daft Punk

By KERRI MASON October 20, 2011 6:36PM

Nightclub lasers and lights are one thing. These days, electronic music visuals are on a whole other level. Artists have upped the production ante on their live shows, taking the DJ set out of the club and into the venue.

Deadmau5 travels with what he calls the “Expert Griefing Machine,” a splay of Rubik’s shapes, animation and video. Skrillex has the “Skrillex Cell,” which allows sky-high avatars of robots and skeletons to mimic his movements. Continue reading

Sander Van Doorn on his latest album “Eleve11″

Sander Van Doorn – Drink to Get Drunk Download

House, trance and EDM acts sometimes seem bent on dropping club- and festival-ready singles or remixes without devoting much time to crafting full albums. With acts like Swedish House Mafia selling out Madison Square Garden on the back of two studio albums made up primarily of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso’s individual work and an armada of remixes, it can be hard for EDM acts to focus on creating artist albums.

There are, of course, artists who focus heavily on original production. With his second album, ‘Eleve11′ — released Sept. 19 on his own Doorn Records – Sander van Doornlooks to maintain his place in that second group of artists. A solid album that plays well as a continuous mix, ‘Eleve11′ has received positive nods from dance music blogs and charted well on both iTunes and Beatport. Standout tracks include the Laidback Luke collaboration ‘Who’s Wearing the Cap’ and ‘Rolling the Dice,’ featuring vocals from Nadia Ali and production help from Sidney Samson. Of course, summer hits ‘Love Is Darkness’ and the whistle-ready ‘Koko’ are also included. Continue reading

Daft Punk’s Gold-Plated Coke Bottles Are More Daft Than Punk

Daft Punk’s Gold-Plated Coke Bottles Are More Daft Than Punk

When I heard about Coca-Cola’s latest marketing stunt–a limited-edition run of Coke bottles stamped with 18-karat gold, co-branded with Daft Punk–I couldn’t help but be reminded of that Chase credit card commercial that shows a bunch of random objects being spray-painted gold and wonder just what the mothertrucking point actually is. I won’t deny it: I love Coke. And hey, Daft Punk is pretty cool, I guess. But does a light sprinkling of precious metal really turn a piece of trash into a “collector’s item”? Continue reading

Wolfgang Gartner releases “WEEKEND IN AMERICA (EXTENDED VERSIONS)”

“I have to make something that’s never been made before; have to make the best thing that I’ve ever done in my life – otherwise it gets stagnant or worse,” says producer/DJ Wolfgang Gartner. Whether or not his progressively more maximilist take on electro-house is your bag or not, you have to respect his exponentially steep rise through the electro-house ranks. And Lord knows, you’ve heard it — or about it: flipping Beethoven’s 5th for the 4 am crowd; eight #1 tracks on Beatport; remix/collabs with Britney Spears, Timbaland and Black Eyed Peas; festival-highlight performances at Coachella ‘10 and Electric Daisy Carnival’s ‘10 and ‘11.

Deadmau5, who sold out Festival Pier, has become a movement-shaping performer.

Thirty-year-old Canadian Joel Zimmerman probably didn’t start life wanting to lead a nation of techno-house fanatics to distraction. Heck, there was barely a nation of electro-fans to speak of when the Ontario-born producer began making music.

And once he strapped on a giant mouse head, adopting a new persona, things changed. He became larger than life, bigger than the catchy but minimal progressive house sounds and laser-filled shows he became known for. Continue reading

A weekend in Ibiza: Masquerade Motel with Alesso and Benny Benassi

What’s all the fuzz about “Ibiza” you say?

A weekend in Ibiza: Masquerade Motel with Alesso and Benny Benassi

The rhythm of summer pulses from one island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. It blows up with international club tourists that dance all night and hang on the beaches all day. This island brings the SoundCloud-inclined rising stars of tomorrow and the old school big names alike. More top 100 clubs reside on this 220 square mile island than in the entire United States.

Of course I’m talking about the one, the only, Eivissa, or as you may know it, Ibiza  (though it’s often pronounced with a lisp as in “Ibitha”). This season the halfway point between Barcelona and Algeria has been home to David Guetta’s prudish but legendary F*** Me, I’m Famous party, Eric Morillo’s Subliminal, the Come Togetherparty at Space, Judgement Sundays at Eden, and Amnesia’s famous Cream.  Our personal favorite, however, has to be Swedish House Mafia’s reigning event at Pacha,Masquerade Motel.

In this short Ibizan tale — typical of many — I’ll bring you through a 16 hour day in the world capital of dance music. From the morning trip to the fruit market, to the afternoon beach party, into the unforgettable main event of the evening — the Masquerade Motel, get ready to take a ride as you get a small taste of what this little island has to offer.

Embellish yourself… Take the Journey here!
