Before Deadmau5 and Foo Fighters joined forces Sunday night at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, the Canadian superstar DJ made some news of his own by playing a joke on his DJ pal Skrillex on the red carpet.

“But @skrillex, doesn’t mean you’re safe from getting the ultimate mau5 trolling experience :) prepare :) hahaha love u!” Deadmau5 tweeted Sunday, giving Skrillex a heads up that something was going to happen.

One Small Step for Skrillex, One Big Step for EDM + Why didn’t he performed? {VIDEO}

Over the past two or three years, we’ve witnessed a large emergence of electronic dance music, or EDM. It’s hard to pin down exactly when things started blowing up for this scene, especially since massive concerts like Electric Daisy Carnival have been around since the 1990s and consistently prove to be some of the biggest events in North America, drawing crowds over 100,000 regularly.

One of the breakout stars of this past year’s EDC in Las Vegas was the burgeoning phenom of the electronic scene, Skrillex. Skrillex’s rise has included a breakout into the mainstream, something few modern DJs have managed to accomplish. He took the underutilized subgenre of dubstep, then mixed it with new experimental sounds and brought it to every college party across America. He even brought it to television with a trailer for “Red Tails.”

Now, he has five Grammy nominations – including Best New Artist – and three Grammy awards under his belt, with victories for Best Dance/Electronica Album (Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites), Best Dance Recording (“Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”) and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical (“Cinema”).

But before all this, Sonny Moore was a 17 year old who got his start as the guitarist then lead vocalist for Georgia-based rock band “From First to Last.” Being a talented and trained musician before his transition to DJ Skrillex in 2008 has certainly informed his current music.

Meet Skrillex, the Divisive, Grammy-Nominated DJ Who’s Changing Dance Music

Feb 9, 2012 6:40 AM EST

Skrillex has emerged as the most talked-about DJ in electronic music, drawing huge crowds to his raucous live shows, amassing millions of hits on YouTube, and garnering five Grammy nods—including Best New Artist. The 24-year-old opens up to Marlow Stern about his meteoric rise.grammy-nominations-skrillex-stern.jpg

 On a cool February evening in downtown New York City, a deluge of fans are packed against the glass of a trendy clothing store to see DJ phenom Skrillex. Earlier that day, black, medallion-like credentials were hand-delivered to attendees. One side bore the DJ’s logo; the other, a cryptic message to meet at the store and “BE BLINDFOLDED & DRIVEN TO A SECRET LOCATION.”

Daft Punk. New Album… enough said!

Wed 8th Feb, 2012 in International News

Overnight, the interwebs went into overdrive about a tantalising comment from funk/disco legend Nile Rodgers to the Houston Culture Map about elusive robots Daft Punk: “Those guys are great. They’re coming to my apartment on Monday and we’re going to talk about making a new record together.”

This morning we were able to go straight to the source ahead of the Chic Australian tour and press Nile Rodgers about the Daft Punk comment. The rub? They’re definitely making a record together and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter had just left his place…

“We were just jamming at my house, but it’s gonna be proper and real,” Rodgers told us down the line. “They came over to my studio today around breakfast time and it’s now evening I basically had to almost kick them out. We were having so much fun just in an informal setting that we decided to make it formal. And it’s very formal. It’s gonna be amazing.”

The 3D Mapping of Axwell’s “Cosmic Opera” + Last 500 Cosmic Opera Tickets tomorrow! {VIDEOS}

February 23 and 24. New York will witness for the first time ever something the world has never seen before. An Electronic Dance concert combined with an Opera that goes parallel with the music of Axwell (1/3 member of Swedish House Mafia) while using special 3D Projectors called 3D Mapping.

At the Cosmic Opera event, 3D mapping will be used on the walls, giving you the imagination that your are in another place. According to Mr. Cohen “Special projectors will be used to cast three-dimensional images on the walls of the landmark ballroom, turning the space into a disorienting whirl of images – a technique known as 3-D mapping” (The New York Times “Multimedia Dance shows coming to Hammerstein Ballroom”)

An example we can use is in the video below. It is 3D mapping used to promote the movie The Tourist.

Electronic dance music is EXPLODING!! Grammy nod and big buzz boost Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5

Thousands of fans stare at a concert stage, rapt — even though it holds no singer, rapper, guitarist, bassist, drummer or dancer. They’re entranced by just a guy or two mucking around with knobs, wires and turntables. Occasionally, blinding flashes of lights and lasers obscure them entirely. A setup like this — the norm in the shadowy world of electronic dance music — used to limit an act’s ability to achieve mainstream success and fame in America.

Now it’s becoming a selling point.
